How To Make Your Hair Extensions Last Longer

The Coronavirus Pandemic has caused all kinds of issues when it comes to not being able to go about life as usual, and hair disasters have been a particular issue, with many documenting their lockdown looks as they try to maintain their styles from home, often unsuccessfully.

If you are a hair extension wearer, you may have found that you need to keep your hair extensions in for longer than you had expected. The last thing you want to do is remove them, as not only would that be hugely time-consuming, but not having the hair you love is not going to make lockdown any easier to deal with.

That said, we have put together our top tips on how you can get your hair extensions to last longer, keeping them in a healthy condition until you can get a new set installed.

The key to your hair extensions lasting as long as possible is preventing them from becoming dry and making sure they do not become tangled at the roots.

As your hair extensions grow out, your bonds will become more and more prone to tangling, so you are going to have to step up your game when it comes to daily maintenance. You will need to make sure you are separating your bonds every single day, and multiple times a day if possible.

When washing your hair, you are going to need to be more mindful of your bonds than ever before, as the longer they are left in, the weaker they will become. We would recommend investing in a leave-in conditioner spray, to detangle your hair as gently as you can after it has been washed. We would also recommend investing in a wide-tooth comb, to gently comb out large tangles, before working through your hair with your hair extension brush.

The older your hair extensions are, the more likely they are to either tangle or fall out, so treating your hair extensions with extra care during this time will help keep them in for a long as possible.

As well as your bonds, you will, of course, need to be looking after the hair itself, as the older the hair gets, the more likely it is to start feeling tired and dry. The reason for this is that our natural hair receives nourishment from our scalp in the form of sebum. Sebum is the natural oil our scalp produces that can make our hair feel greasy between washes. As hair extensions are not attached at the scalp, they do not receive any nourishment from sebum, making them far more prone to breakage and dryness. Fortunately, there is a solution to this, which is an all-natural treatment to act as a substitute for sebum. Our favourite product for this is the HairExtensionsBff pre-shampoo treatment. This is designed to work in the same way as sebum, so you apply it to your hair extensions (unwashed hair), and leave the treatment to soak in overnight. You then wash your hair with your regular shampoo and conditioner, leaving your hair extensions feeling revitalised and soft. As this is an all-natural treatment, it doesn't contain any artificial ingredients like silicones, and only natural oils and fragrances, so it is super important to only apply the treatment to the mid-lengths and ends.

If you need your hair extensions to last much longer than usual, for example during the Coronavirus Pandemic, then we would recommend doing a treatment like this a couple of times a week.

Hair extensions are a perishable product, and they will change while you have them in. However, the degree to which they change can be affected by an excellent aftercare routine, so looking after your hair, applying conditioning treatments and being mindful of the hair extensions becoming weaker, can help to extend the life of your hair extensions.
