Before having hair extensions fitted an important question you should ask yourself before hand is whether or not hair extensions will fit in with your lifestyle, and what you should expect from your hair extensions depending on your general daily activities.
This may come as a surprise, but not all lifestyles will be compatible with hair extensions, therefore it is important that you consider all factors before going ahead to ensure it is the right choice for you.
There are many different lifestyle choices that can have an impact on hair extensions, and unfortunately we are not able to list them all, however we will outline some of the most common aspects that can impact on how long your extensions will last, daily care etc.
Hair Extensions At The Gym
If you are a gym addict, or at least attend a few times a week you will need to consider the impact this will have on your hair extensions. Although it is absolutely fine to go to the gym whilst wearing hair extensions, it will mean that you are likely to need to wash your hair slightly more often than is recommended, purely due to the amount of sweating your hair is likely to be exposed to. It is usually recommended that hair extensions are washed 2-3 times a week, therefore managing your gym sessions around times in which yours hair extensions are due to be washed will help to reduce over washing, which can strip hair of its natural oils and be very time consuming. You will also need to take into consideration that whilst at the gym you will most likely need to secure your hair back to avoid it getting in your way, which can put some pressure on the bonds, therefore with the addition of you perspiring more heavily and added tension as a gym goer you may find that you lose slightly more bonds between your maintenance appointment than a non-gym goer. This of course is not a problem and completely to be expected, however you will need to bear this in mind before going ahead with your lovely new locks.
Hair Extensions And Swimming
If you are a regular swimmer you will need to be sure that you are able to secure your hair away from the water during every visit. Chlorine can over time cause hair extensions to become dry or brittle and therefore should be avoided at all costs. The chlorine can also affect the hair colour in some cases and the integrity of the bond, therefore submersion in chlorinated water should be avoided at all costs. Just like those that attend the gym, due to your higher level of activity you will find you may need to wash your hair more frequently, and secure your hair back more often, so more regular maintenance appointments and check-ups may be needed to ensure your hair extensions stay looking beautiful.
Pro Tip: You may want to consider having
double drawn weft extensions, which you can then turn into clipins and wear on occasion.
Hair Extensions & Ponytails
If you are required to secure your hair back for work you will still be able to do this whilst wearing hair extensions, however you will need to think up some creative hairstyles to ensure you do not put regular pressure on the bonds in the same areas. If you repeatedly tie your hair back in a tight ponytail every day, you will be putting strain on the same extensions around the bottom and framing the face each day and are likely to cause these to eventually come loose. By mixing up your hair styles and wearing in a looser position you should be able to avoid this from happening, however like our gym goers and swimmers you may need more regular maintenance appointments to stay on top of this.
Wearing Hair Extensions With A Busy Lifestyle
If you are short on time in the mornings, managing a young family, busy career etc before embarking on hair extensions you will need to think about the time is takes to manage and care for your new locks to make sure you will be able to commit the level of care that is required. Hair extensions do not take a great deal of time to manage in the morning, but it will be longer than your current routine, and you will find you are more restricted than you are used to. Examples of this would be not being able to sleep with your hair wet or damp, making sure you are brushing your hair regularly, only washing 2-3 times a week etc. As long as you feel these daily chores can easily slot into your life, then hair extensions will still be suitable for you.
Regular Hair Extension Maintenance Appointments
There are of course many factors that will come into play in regards to whether or not your current lifestyle will match well with a new set of hair extensions, however the most important thing to consider is the more unusual your daily routine, the more important maintenance appointments will be for you, and as long as you can commit to upholding these on a regular basis (usually every 4-6 weeks) then hair extensions are suitable for almost any lifestyle choice. You will need to be sure you are able to commit the time to your hair extensions, following the advised aftercare routine to the letter, even if you are rushed or busy, as this is the only way to ensure your hair extensions will stay looking beautiful.
Once you have taken all of this into consideration you will be ready for your new set of extensions, and within a matter of weeks you will wonder how you ever managed without them!
